Dana Mize& the big m ranch
The Saturday after Christmas was basically one of the last hunts we were going to be able to do before deer season closed. Luckily, Robert came to hang out with us for the day and we were just goofing off. So we get to the afternoon and I decided I wanted to take the opportunity to hunt one last time before the season was over with and I would have to wait another 7 months or so to try to shoot my first deer. Houston and Robert wanted to have some guy time anyways so it worked out great! I got to hunt.. They got to have some much needed "boyfriend time" together... lol I got into the stand around 3:30, the temp was around 35 to 40 degrees, it started to sprinkle. I don't know if any of you hunt but is it just me that I get in the stand all comfy and bundled up aaannndddd I gotta pee?!? Really Bladder.... Right Now? Anyways. I kept my focus into the woods and about an hour and a half later, just before night started falling I saw it! A deer. About 60 or so yards away, across the creek, walking up the ridge. My hands started shaking, my heart started racing, I got a little light headed. I KNEW this was it! It trotted across the dam on top of the creek. Stopped... Observed... Walked a few more steps.... Stopped.... Observed... and then took off for the top of the ridge. I pulled my Mossberg .308 up. Lined my sight up. And at this point in my life I have NEVER been so excited to bleat MMMEEHHHH!!! He stopped right in my cross hairs. I was thinking, "You have got to be kidding me" All of a sudden my heart stopped racing, my hands stopped shaking, my adrenaline was still rushing... but I disengaged the safety, eased on the trigger and I TOOK THE SHOT! Dropped him right where he stood. I about passed out when I saw I made the hit. Robert and Houston said they jumped out of their clothes when they heard the shot! I was maybe 100 yd or so behind them in the opposite direction. First I called Brian, I had to let him know! I hate everyone else wasn't there but I was so happy to have Houston and Robert with me! I waited in the stand until Hou & Robert got there and then we crossed the creek to get the deer! After my initiation process (Deer blood on the face) Robert and Houston carried the deer out of the woods for me and then we took it to the processor. The cape has just been finished and sent to the taxidermist. Needless to say, I thought this was THE season and sure enough after screwing around and not going as much as I should have, It still happened! I am so excited to get my mount back and to have some meat to put in the freezer! As for the deer, We got to it and it seemed to be a button buck but the head and body looked like a more mature buck and one of the antlers looks like it had been broken off and the other was a nub. Brian thanked me for taking down the "retarded" deer of the property. lol Either way, I am proud of myself and excited for my first deer! I will have to add the photos of the guys carrying the deer out as soon as I can get a hold of them.
All in all it was a fun safe and exciting Season. Another post will follow up about the entire season as a whole. Thanks for tuning in! Carolina Love & Happy Hunting, D.
